Resources
Below is a list of national organizations that contribute to
environmental public health tracking. The Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC) has a website about the National
Environmental Public Health Tracking Program (exit DHFS). The CDC also
maintains a list of funded
environmental public health tracking projects (exit DHFS).
National
Organizations
APHA
The American
Public Health Association works to protect all
Americans and their communities from preventable, serious health threats.
APHA represents a broad array of health officials, educators,
environmentalists, policy-makers and health providers at all levels
working both within and outside governmental organizations and educational
institutions.
APHL
The
Association of Public Health Laboratories is focusing its work on
transforming biomonitoring technology from CDC to the states. APHL
created a document identifying how states would implement biomonitoring
programs, and is educating policy makers on the needs for biomonitoring
funding.
ASTHO
The
Association of State and Territorial Health Officials' role is to
serve as a conduit of information among CDC, state grantees, Centers of
Excellence, and the unfunded states. ASTHO will also serve as a
liaison to the environmental regulatory agencies though a partnership with
ECOS.
CSTE
The
Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists has been working
collaboratively with CDC to identify environmental public health
indicators for use in the National Environmental Public Health Tracking
Network. In addition, State
Environmental Health Indicators Collaborative (SEHIC) was established
to develop a pilot set of environmental public health indicators.
ECOS
The
Environmental Council of the States is developing materials to inform
the state environmental agencies about tracking. In collaboration
with ASTHO, ECOS is also working to increase collaboration between the
state health and environmental agencies.
NACCHO
The
National Association of County and City Health Officials' goal is to
ensure that the local public health perspectives and needs are addressed
in the creation of a national tracking network. NACCHO will also
communicate tracking lessons learned and model practices to the local
public health officials.
NEHA
The
National Environmental Health Association aims to evaluate the
knowledge base of environmental health professionals in regards to
tracking. NEHA will also be working to educate its membership about
tracking.
PSR
Physicians
for Social Responsibility will be working to increase the knowledge
base and technical skills of physicians involved in the tracking
initiative. PSR will focus on engaging the medical community within
the funded states and educating the medical community in the unfunded
states.
